Operationalize Sustainability Essay Example for Free
Operationalize Sustainability Essay ââ¬Å"We must endeavor to become frameworks scholars on the off chance that we are to profit by the interrelationships of the triple main concern of maintainability: crucial, and communityâ⬠(manageability. armed force. mil). Welcome to the Army procedure for the earth. As perhaps the biggest association in America, the Army has joined the development towards manageability. With 4 accessible assets, 5 utilitarian regions and 7 projects and usage devices, the Army is flooding forward with applying manageability rehearses. The motivation behind this work is to reveal into the Armyââ¬â¢s P2, or Pollution Prevention program, just as giving interchange recommendations on forestalling waste. Contamination Prevention (P2) is characterized as the precise exertion to limit, or dispose of inside and out, process squander and different toxins before that are created (armed force. mil). P2 is a program that is only one instrument to help accomplish supportability. This program can be applied to pretty much every perspective from field preparing, lodging, family life, establishment tasks and weapons creations. To operationalize the P2 program, the Army has applied the essential standards of contamination anticipation just as built up the P2 pecking order: decrease, reuse, reuse and arrange in an ecologically protected way. The primary goal in the chain of importance is decrease. The Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) characterizes this as ââ¬Å"Any practice which 1) lessens the measure of any risky substance, contamination, or contaminant entering any waste stream or in any case discharged into the earth (counting criminal emanations) before reusing, treatment, or removal; and 2) diminishes the dangers to open ealth and the earth related with the arrival of such substances, toxins, or contaminants. The term incorporates hardware or innovation adjustments, procedure or technique alterations, reformulation or upgrade of items, replacement of crude materials, and enhancements in housekeeping, support, preparing, or stock controlâ⬠(armed force. mil) In the P2 program, this definition is applied to the expansive objective of lessening or disposing of the ecological effects of expending assets and the waste that is created from it. This waste can emerge out of Army vehicle support, for example, oil changes or leaving PCs and lights on toward the finish of the work day. Reuse and reuse in progression are intended for contamination that can't be forestalled. For this situation, contamination ought to be treated in an earth safe way at whatever point practical. ââ¬Å"The assets of a country must be continually overseen: extended at that point accumulated, assembled then disseminated every individual or gathering once in a while picking up, here and there losing, however consistently approached reasonably and with deference. (Oââ¬â¢Toole, 1993, p. 108) For instance, Fort Bragg Army base in North Carolina has manufactured a whole town out of materials reused or occupied from the Fort Bragg landfill. This reused ââ¬Å"trashâ⬠town is utilized in preparing and planning troops for organization. On the off chance that the initial three moves can't be made, the last advance in the P2 progressive system is to removal, expulsion and release of contamination into nature ought to be utilized uniquely if all else fails and ought to be led in an ecologically protected way. We will take a gander at how these issues have emerged, and how they are for the most part manifestations of a method of living that we have underestimated, which has created extraordinary advancement yet in addition developing side effectsâ⬠(Senge, 2008, p. 10) While this program and numerous others are giving the Army propels the correct way toward maintainability, there are different endeavors that can be made to help forestall squander. In manageability, squander isn't held to junk alone. Waste can be the superfluous utilization of, or corruption, of assets. For the Army, a proposal for counteraction can be observing the utilization of gadgets. Every office in the military has a few PCs since the military discusses to a great extent with messages, share drives and electronic preparing and staff records. These PCs are persistently on for the duration of the day, considerably after work force return home. ââ¬Å"U. S. associations waste $2. 8 billion every year to control unused machines, transmitting around 20 million tons of carbon dioxideâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Swartz, 2009) at times, for example, clinics with move laborers, there might be a requirement for dynamic PCs. In different cases, the Army can actualize a clock, customized for the finish of a move, to kill all PCs. The special case might be to leave one on for extra utilization of individuals working late, yet the others would consequently stop, sparing the vitality use as opposed to having PCs in rest mode for the duration of the night. ââ¬Å"Simply closing down PCs around evening time can spare an organization with 10,000 PCs over $260,000 per year and 1,871 tons of carbon dioxide emanations, the report says. (Swartz, 2009) The equivalent goes for radios, printers, faxes, superfluous apparatus and all other unnecessary gadgets. Another proposal is make self-supporting exercise centers. Exercise and the military go connected at the hip. Exercise is coordinated and required to have an effective military vocation. Numerous individuals go to the rec center, well-trained as well as needy companions, veterans, common assistance laborers and regular folks with base access. The treadmill, curved, bicycles and step climbers are the most utilized gear in the rec center because of the assorted variety of benefactors. Eco-accommodating exercise centers have been springing up around the world. â⬠(Huey, 2008) This can be utilized to the Armyââ¬â¢s advantage by utilizing the vitality yield from the machines being used to produce the power for the lighting in the exercise center and activity of TVs. Rather than having TVs on and accessible consistently, have TVs operational just on the machine while it is being used, being fueled by the administrator. ââ¬Å"A one of a kind and key component of green rec centers is that they can really utilize the vitality produced from individuals practicing and utilize that to control their offices. (Huey, 2008) Obviously this may not continue a whole rec center, considering cooling, warming and the size of the rec center to incorporate playing courts, yet this can help to radically bring down vitality utilization. The Army additionally squanders gear, which can deliver contamination upon removal. This hardware is the boots, coats, regalia, camel packs, Gerber instruments, and so on that is given to troops. At the point when a troop finishes essential preparing, or training camp, the necessary introductory hardware things are given. At the point when a troop conveys to an abroad area, new gear is given, regardless of whether the troop as of late finished training camp. This outcomes in a twofold issue of gear to similar soldiers, with no necessity to turn in unused or unneeded hardware. ââ¬Å"While Soldiers have grasped the RFI procedure, they as of late recognized one significant issue region in the RFI procedure: Their attire records having copy things that were recently given. â⬠(Maj. Wright, 2009) Military individuals are likewise given an attire stipend consistently for new garbs. This outcomes in cash lost and hardware waste and misuse. Troops can discard unused gear without appropriately reusing the materials. To help put a beware of gear, the Army can execute a ââ¬Å"turn in, tag outâ⬠framework. This implies troops should turn in old, destroyed gear, for example, boots, to be given new matches. A ââ¬Å"tag outâ⬠on gave things will be kept electronically in a database to guarantee people are not being given twofold things. Flexibly work force can gaze upward by name and decide whether the troop has just gotten a thing. With old gear being transformed into flexibly, the correct individuals can appropriately and earth securely arrange or reuse utilized hardware. Additionally, by archiving gear that is given out and what hardware is being turned in, gracefully work force will be better prepared in requesting new things productively as opposed to requesting unnecessary items and squandering cash. Despite the fact that the Army has stepped toward operationalizing manageability, there are a lot more that can be taken. The Army may never be completely supportable because of various preparing missions that utilization fuel, vitality and normal assets, yet every exertion checks toward decreasing, reusing and discarding contamination appropriately. These advances can be applied toward other military branches too. For example, the Navy dumps a huge number of gallons of fuel into our environment to make the planes lighter and ready to arrive on bearers adrift. While this move is accomplished for security, the measure of gas put into the plane at first is known to be a lot after landing. This is an undeniable zone to enhance. Manageability can be operationalized by each business, association and friends on the planet. ââ¬Å"What weve found on our excursion is that executing maintainability is a ton like actualizing some other corporate change activity. (Hitchcock, 2006, p. 167) The military is continually changing and continually adjusting. Taking everything into account, the Army has numerous projects and apparatuses that are operationalizing maintainability rehearses. The P2 program is an incredible beginning to dealing with frameworks that produce waste and contamination. The chain of command of lessen, reuse, reuse and discard in an earth safe way is the correct outlook for maintainability. The Army additionally has regions that can be enhanced, similarly as with any organization. The Army is gaining ground towards supportability, which is progress the correct way for a superior future. Cell Phone essays
Mobile phone articles The Development of Cellular Telephones Have you at any point halted to figure what it would resembled before we had mobile phones? You couldnt simply call from your vehicle on the off chance that you were running behind schedule for work, in a disaster area, or attempting to discover bearings. Innovation is expanding step by step, and going to never really get greater. With each new piece of innovation we get, there are in every case great and terrible to come. Finding these issues is the thing that makes innovation fascinating. Since a cell phone is actually a two way radio, you can begin following PDA history back to 1876 with the innovation of the phone by Alexander Graham Bell(********). What's more, to the phone there must be another part this is the place the radio designed by Guglielmo Marconi came in 1895(********). A mobile phone goes through two frequencies, one for sending your voice out and one which permits one to come in. This is the reason mobile phones are viewed as two way radios, or full-duplex devices(******) along these lines beyond what each individual can convey in turn, rather than a half-duplex for example a walkie-talkie which just permits one individual to talk at a time(******). It was not until 1984 that mobile phones were first mass advertised to general society (*notes*). This was a blast in innovation as it despite everything keeps on rising. Whenever anyplace you could call who ever, any place you wished. Many specialist co-ops utilized remote plans. B. Sum up Body Paragraphs C. Sparing 630 existences of children and girls in a year ought not be a theme to talk about, yet to be set quickly in real life and bolster the best development a human at any point made, the bike. A Ride to a Better World ââ¬Å"The loss of 630 lives in bike crashes in 2009, just shy of two individuals each day of the year in the U.S., is an awful tollâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Bicycle Crash Factsâ⬠), states the U.S. Division of Transportation Federal Highway Administration. These days individuals live unconsciously with bicycling being excessively hazardous, overlooking that it is a sound, elective and viable type of transportation that gives an intriguing method of working out. In addition to the fact that bicyclists have to be taught, yet in addition each client of an open vehicle must be educated about bicycle wellbeing; each vehicle client must know about bicycles precisely as they are for different vehicles. All together for a cyclist to be sheltered, vehicle drivers and motorcyclists need to regard cyclists as a vehicle precisely as they may be. Because of the absence of instruction in bicycle wellbeing, Elementary Schools in the U.S. try not to give, youngsters are bound to be engaged with car crashes, have an expanded danger of death, and the pace of individuals riding bicycles is quickly diminishing. Kids are not educated appropriately about the distinctive traffic signs, the significance of a head protector and different themes, which are principal for an individual to have the option to ride a bicycle. John Pucher, a teacher of urban arranging, has been directing a lot of research on transport strategies, transport frameworks, and uniquely bicycling conduct in Europe, Canada, and the USA. Considered a specialist on the point arranging and open arrangement, he educated; ââ¬Å"Freiburg, Germany revealed the biggest increment in bicycling, nearly multiplying the bike portion of excursions from 15% in 1982 to 27% in 2007. These information recommend that it might be hard to build bicycling past effectively high levelsâ⬠(Putcher, John). Beyond question, the explanation behind the expansion in bicycling in this nation is instruction. In Germany, kids in fourth grade need to required take a permit test for bikes. Essentially, it is equivalent to a driverââ¬â¢s permit; for a month kids are instructed by their instructors about traffic signs and how to respond in various rush hour gridlock circumstances. After the hypothetical exercises, they carry their as of now reviewed bicycles to class and start with down to earth exercises, riding on little traffic lines and obeying traffic signs recently introduced. To cause the circumstance to appear to be progressively formal, youngsters apprehensively take the hypothetical and functional test, directed by two cops. Excitedly, every youngster needs to intrigue their folks by riding as great as could reasonably be expected. Tzirath Perez, a thirteen-year old young lady, portrays her involvement with fourth grade: ââ¬Å"Thanks to the bike exercises I had in Germany, presently, when I ride my bicycle with my companions, I have a sense of safety, certain and I am happy I definitely know the vast majority of the traffic signsâ⬠(Perez). Due to the early support for youngsters, they are all the more ready to utilize their bicycles and are set up to ride through traffic securely on their way to their goal. By wearing a head protector and knowing precisely how to carry on the road when riding their bicycles to class, German youngsters help to decrease their parentââ¬â¢s vehicle use in light of the fact that these youthful cyclists can travel securely without a car. Since these youngsters ride their bicycles to class toward the beginning of the day they spare their folks from the pressure of hustling to prepare in the first part of the day for school and from investing energy stuck in vehicle clogs attempting to get the opportunity to class. Because of the bicycle paths, which the U.S government has acquainted with the lanes, it is more secure for kids to ride their bicycles and they will show up quicker at their goal. After school, when youngsters ride home they loosen up their body and psyche, getting a charge out of the excellent nature and breathing outside air. While riding their bikes among school and home, youngsters possess a tad of energy for themselves to quiet somewhere near disregarding the distressing school and disturbed guardians. Jennifer Dill, a teacher at the Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning, states in her examination paper: ââ¬Å"An broad and quickly developing writing recommends the need to encourage bicycling through proper foundation, (for example, bicycle ways and bicycle stopping), traffic quieting, preparing and instruction programs, and other steady measuresâ⬠(Dill, Jennifer). Clearly, the catchphrase to this whole issue is instruction; schools are framing the estimations of the following period of humankind. On the off chance that the accompanying age isn't equipped for understanding basic traffic signs, how to drive securely nor the day by day sway the utilization of a vehicle is having on our planet, they are gradually stepping toward a world brimming with oblivious individuals, who will flop in their endeavor to make our planet a superior spot. Shockingly, instructors now and then don't pay attention to their occupations as teachers and don't consider the to be subject as a significant factor in our general public. America could encounter a diminishing in car crashes, where kids are included, not by decreasing cyclists, yet by instructing appropriately Americaââ¬â¢s youth. Likewise, Teachers and guardians ought to energize their kids and understudies to ride their bicycles all the more every now and again, what could keep them from heftiness and contamination. ââ¬Å"Obesity and physical inertia among more youthful individuals is a significant issue we need to handle and biking has demonstrated an exceptionally mainstream after-school movement with the youngstersâ⬠(Milford, Lynne), saw Chris French, a senior general wellbeing pro at NHS North East Essex, about the biking-program he has done in different schools as an extracurricular action. Without a doubt, Chris French is setting a remarkable good example for us to follow, however our last objective is to fuse bike training in our official instruction framework, so it is required for each and every youngster who goes to a government funded school. Thusly we can urge them to accomplish all the more practicing and gain since the beginning on the greater part of the significant traffic signs to be more ready when they need to do their permit test later on. On the off chance that guardians can't bear to pay their youngsters an extracurricular movement outside from school, bicycling is a modest elective way that can be amazingly lovely for kids in each age and grown-ups in its different types of utilization, for example, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦mountain bicycling, hustling bicycling, visiting bicycling or BMX bikingâ⬠(Baxamusa, Batul); luckily, the various decent variety of utilizing a bike can interest a wide range of various individuals. Additionally, the exorbitantly utilization of videogame is hurting the people to come, since they engage themselves for a considerable length of time by not moving anyone part, however their fingers making the consuming of calories practically unimaginable. Other than the viciousness of this deficient videogames thinks about the kids, which begin being discourteous towards their folks and not complying with their limitations. The routine would turn out to be in the end an endless loop, in light of the fact that the youngsters continue defying their folks and playing more videogames. In spite of the fact that ââ¬Å"33 percent of kids and youngsters are corpulent in the United Statesâ⬠(Stein, Cherie), most of guardians grievously don't recognize nor acknowledge the overweight of their own kids; because of the separating society we live in. A blend of absence of physical action, hereditary elements and unfortunate eating designs is the significant reason for stoutness in youngsters, implemented by their reluctance to do practice and outside-playing exercises. Luckily, two of these causes, physical action and eating designs, can be controlled intently by instructors and guardians, on the off chance that they have a solid activity tow ard their kids. Youngsters are anything but difficult to control; if a parent or an instructor eagerly urged kids to ride their bicycles in any event once per week and consolidated it with a sound eating routine, the quantity of hefty youngsters in the United States could without much of a stretch be decreased. Additionally, bicycling can't just diminish heart and lung illnesses, yet in addition asthma and overweight related ailments. Not exclusively are the youngsters at risk for sound dangers, yet additionally in peril to the introduction of companions harassing them for their overweight. In the long run this kind of badgering can prompt lower confidence and even mental mischief. In the event that an individual has the apparatus to forestall and take care of a significant issue with horrendous outcomes, this individual ought not squander brief more on t

To Change the World Professor Ramos Blog
To Change the World ââ¬Å"You canââ¬â¢t change the world without getting your hands dirtyâ⬠â⬠Lelouch Lamperouge Chess is a definitive round of rationale, and keeping in mind that war may include a mixed drink involved morals, rationale, law, dread, and pulverization, we see a war played also to a round of chess when we investigate the frenzy that is inside the psyche of Lelouch vi Britannia (or his moniker Lelouch Lamperouge). We comprehend that the purpose of this exposition is to pass on musings on a causal investigation of a beast, a spoiler cautioning is important. Through liquid narrating and a startling drive, this is the way a dispositioned ruler takes over the world after he is ousted. His techniques, however rough and fierce, would be viewed as a round of chess, giving up huge numbers of his own so as to pick up progress in fight, however figuring out how to stay a positive figure to his own subordinates all through his time battling for power. Lelouch Lamperouge is a 15-year-old kid who watched his mother and sister become losses to a fear based oppressor assault. His mom, Marianne was murdered by rifle shoot while ensuring Leloucheââ¬â¢s sister Nunnally. After scrutinizing his dad for his motherââ¬â¢s passing, Lelouch indicated hatred towards his dad for the passing of his mom and the disablement of his sister. Because of his through and through and outright hatred, Charles vi Britannia, the Emperor, ousted Lelouch and his sister as political pawns to Japan. This was the seed that would definitely birth the beast. Lelouch would before long swear ââ¬Å"to wreck Britanniaâ⬠(Episode 1 Code Geass, 2006) After Lelouch what's more, his sister were sent, the Emperor sent a torrent of assaults to the island country, effectively overcoming it with the presentation of enormous, mechanical weapons called Knightmare Frames or Autonomous Armored Knights. Japan is rapidly vanquished and rebranded as Area 11. Lelouch and his closest companion, Suzaku Kururugi witness the massacre, and Lelouch pledges to decimate his fatherââ¬â¢s domain. These early occasions sparkle what might get one of the most very much idea out and top to bottom plotlines in anime. A long time later, Lelouch and Nunnally, who are assumed dead because of the attack of his fatherââ¬â¢s realm, are covered up in a state of banishment utilizing a distinctive last name. Lelouch stayed calm and took to playing chess and betting with respectable individuals from Britannian culture, while remaining living in the dormitories of the Ashford Academy. Lelouch would before long meet his shrewd accomplice, after coincidentally getting associated with the ââ¬Å"witchâ⬠of a young lady and a obstruction gathering. The truck abruptly detonates, murdering just the driver and Lelouch and C.C. experience a Britannian military official, who demonstrates want to execute Lelouch and blameless regular people, with no respect to mankind. Lelouch is out of nowhere offered the ââ¬Å"Power of the Kingsâ⬠, otherwise called Geass. His left eye presently has a sparkling, flying creature like image that enables him to force any individual to do whatever her says. He orders the Britannian official and his subordinates to end it all, prompting two or three dozen troopers to out of nowhere and ceremoniously bite the dust before Lelouch. Out of nowhere, Lelouch is loaded up with motivation, as he had at last comprehended that he at long last had the capacity to battle against his dad, subsequent to covering up for a long time. Lelouch now had the capacity to start taking up arms against the huge, Holy Britannian Empire, and their degenerate government, beginning with ââ¬Å"Area 11â⬠. He tests his capacities by convincing another military official to give him their Knightmare Frame, in which he persuades a neighborhood fear monger gathering to go along, so as to win a fight he out of nowhere put himself into. In the wake of progress, Lelouch sneaks into Area 11 Viceroyââ¬â¢s chambers, who is likewise an antagonized sibling of his, killing him, and asserting the new name ââ¬Å"Zeroâ⬠, pioneer of the new paramilitary power (to Britannians, fear mongers) called the Black Knights, whose strategic to secure the feeble and dislodged Japanese. The young lady, C.C., enables Lelouch to at last increase retaliation for the country he accepted took his family and satisfaction. The movements set into impact from his adolescence, and adventitiously picking up the capacity to control anybody, prompts his guerrilla strategies. Ever, we see this happen ordinarily. Before banish, Stalin had drive to change Eastern Europe and Russia, in any event, going similar to conflicting with Lenin, who regarded, however didn't care much for Stalinââ¬â¢s authority. Stalin, much like Lelouch had feelings for just a couple of individuals. It was expressed that the main individual Stalin genuinely minded for was his first spouse, and subsequently, got colder to every other person. This story additionally identify with Hitler, who rose to control subsequent to battling in a war and battling through the brutal legislative issues of Germany at that point. Lelouch was moreover cold and tainted, giving little consideration about who bites the dust inside an enormous war, and that the entirety of the way to his finishes would be supported. His techniques for ascending to the top as the worldââ¬â¢s most dreaded pioneer, towards the end, makes his history like that of the harshest pioneers weââ¬â¢ve ever observed, for example, Stalin and Hitler, anyway the genuine parts of the bargains contrast from Lelouchââ¬â¢s genuine inheritance in restricting design, in any event inside their purpose. With barely any similitudes between these pioneers, could order him as a ââ¬Å"monster that polices the outskirts of the possibleâ⬠(J. Cohen, Page 12, Seven Theses). At the point when Stalin and Hitler kicked the bucket, the world saw alleviation. Two cruel and cold pioneers whoââ¬â¢ve arranged the decimation of millions each would become a pox lifted from the Earth. Lelouchââ¬â¢s passing would be viewed as the equivalent, as the two previously mentioned pioneers, anyway his passing would be extraordinary. Preceding passing, Lelouch had increased such force and was dreaded by the entirety of the world. He arranged his own passing, having his old buddy take his life before billions of individuals who were watching him everywhere throughout the world. The entirety of the disdain Lelouch picked up would be cleared out when heââ¬â¢d be killed on live TV. The world cheered, and it is accepted the royal position would be given to his little sister, who Lelouch had imagined first and foremost, to carry on with an actual existence in a world without his fatherââ¬â¢s rule. He get away and dodges catch a couple of times, making him fall into the classification of the beast hypothesis, ââ¬Å"The Monster Always Escapesâ⬠(J. Cohen, Page 4, Seven Theses). The beast was made by another beast. Charles vi Britannia, Lelouchââ¬â¢s father, controlled his realm with a hard clench hand, smashing the resistance, and turning into the scourge of the world by different pioneers. He is seen as the prevalent motivation behind why Lelouch would ascend in power, just to inevitably triumph over his dad. C.C., who enables Lelouch to force anybody to do anything, would be the encouraging reason, as he would be not able to use his capacity adequately without her. His actual expectation was to leave the world in a progressively charming state, so his sister could live without the shameful acts, and thatââ¬â¢s precisely what he did, though at the expense of his own life. Maybe it would be counterproductive, considering he and his more youthful sister were close, furthermore, his passing would leave her disheartened, however taking the embarrassment and scorn along with him would satisfy his guarantee to her. Despite the fact that he is viewed as a scourge of the world, to just a couple of special individuals from his staff, he kicked the bucket a saint. ââ¬Å"Fear of the beast is extremely sort of a desireâ⬠(J. Cohen, Page 16, Seven Theses) is my undisputed top choice to relate this beast to inside the seven postulations. To at first use the measure of intensity that enables to change the world would be wished by many, for narrow minded or sacrificial reasons. Be that as it may, what makes the finishing hard to witness is passing on as a heartless despot in the eyes of your subjects, while just few comprehend the genuine aim of your own arranged passing, with his final words being, ââ¬Å"I have pulverized the world and made a newâ⬠, as his sister watches him die. Friends, Carafes, and the Infinite Corridor
Friends, Carafes, and the Infinite Corridor (Note: to everyone who has emailed or commented with questions, I got your messages! I will reply in detail soon. Thanks!) This has been a busy week. Yeah, there were p-sets, but there were also crazy kitties. It rained for the majority of the week and everyone generally stayed indoors ah, New England weather. More time to do homework? Something like that. While I rested most of the weekend, Sunday proved interesting. Join me for brunch, electronics, and numerous hijinks involving Tetazoa and long hallways. ;-) After an aborted hall photo that saw us walking all the way to the Z Center with nothing to show for it, I headed up Mass Ave to Sidney Street, the location of the ubiquitous Star Market and the [emailprotected]. Gregs mom, Diane, was staying there for Family Weekend and had some extra brunch vouchers. I dined with her, Greg, and Christina. (Its about a fifteen minute walk from East Campus.) The food was pretty good! I had my first omelette since coming to MIT, so that was very nice. We then moseyed over to the Swapfest at Albany and Vassar Streets. Several times per year, a swap meet-style event takes place where you can get all kinds of obscure electronics and computer equipment for really low prices. They borrow a parking lot and some other nearby space, and set up shop around the liftgates of pickup trucks and sport-utes. I got an older machine suitable for a server, with delivery to my dorm, for a mere $10! You have entered the Dollar Zone! ! ! Oh, mercy! Who could this possibly be? Never will I know with that MASK aka turtleneck. And yes, only at MIT can you walk past Building 32 (yeah, fine, the Stata Center) on a daily basis. ;-) Back at East Campus, Greg basks in the ambient light of his new $3 construction lamp, acquired at the Swapfest. Alas, basking blondes are no match for pillows in flight. Back on Tetazoo, I met up with a certain Tim. You see, this fellow has a passion for playing instruments, particularly copper pipes from unknown construction sites. He has seven distinct notes that he plays, and hes got this ridiculously low voice to go along with them. Tim wanted to demonstrate his musical prowess to a wide audience, so I donned my corridor gear and gathered Ben and Hannah for a little excursion through MITs internal highways and byways. Ingredients: modified dorm room chair outfitted with Rollerblade wheels, copper pipe, coffee carafe, and a camera. ;-) The carafe acted as a prop to distract onlookers. (Thanks to Hannah for the photos.) Its important to keep in mind the loud harmony of Tims pipe as accompaniment to the chair-rolling and general carafe mayhem. We reached the top floor overlooking Lobby 7, at 77 Mass Ave MITs front entrance. Tims piping ability resonates quite soundly through the lobby. Confused tourists and pedestrians were pondering the lobbys new orchestral feature for several minutes. (Sound Recordings One, Two) Thats Tim lurking behind a pillar. Heres Greg again he sauntered in to enjoy the tunes with us, and brought his hallmate from Fifth East, David Sheets. We got Tim down from the top level for some wet-floor chair rolling and pipe playing, along the slick surface of Lobby 7. Thats Ben commanding the ship from behind. With my and Bens assistance, Tim plays his way down the Infinite, attracting quite the looks from passers-by. Here, Tim serenades Lobby 10 demonstrators as he passes. Theres Dean Redwines office This staircase leads to the basement and provides an interesting acoustic environment. Ben such a showoff. ;-) Yes, the Infinite is quite long. Tims still going! Ah, the Ellen Swallow Richards Lobby, near the Math Department. Tims horn works wonders. We ventured out onto Killian Court (in front of Building 10) for some outdoor pipe playing. Tim and his horn they make a majestic duo. Ben observes from a distance, atop a statue. I look ridiculous! But thats the whole point. Tim found a new perch. Understandably, all of this fanfare on Killian Court attracted some attention. Several tourists and visitors made their way over to investigate and marvel at our ingenuity. They took several pictures to bring back for the family albums. This man remarked that Tims pipe utterance strongly resembled that of an Alpine horn. We investigated the acoustic properties of another statue on the Court, but first had to establish the location of a prop. He is ecstatic! Apparently the statue was cold and it felt interesting on his back. The carafe was empty. Back indoors, we explored a hallway in Building 14 near the Hayden Library. Yet another person stopped to gaze. Much later, Tim and Hannah located more pipes and tubes through which to emit musical melodies. And then I went to bed! :-) Back soon.

Celebrity Role Models Children Emulate - Free Essay Example
Celebrity Role Models Children Emulate Gary Gardner July 11, 2010 Com 150 Phyllis Rosenburg Celebrities are all around us influencing our children; they are on the radio, televisions, computers, ipods and even on cellular phones. Our children hear and see what they do in our homes, cars, stores, and even in their classrooms. Though some celebrities can be a negative influence on children, some can have a positive impact because children will mimic what they see. There are several celebrities that have these positive impacts on children and help kids to aspire to achieve their goals and to follow their dreams. Some of the negative impacts from celebrities can be drug abuse and drinking alcohol like singer Amy Winehouse and singer/actress Lindsey Lohan. Both of these young women have been an influence on the young people who idolize and want to be like them, resulting in young teenage girls thinking it is cool and acceptable behavior to drink, do drugs, and have sex before marriage. Even the person that we are to trust the most, the President of the United States Bill Clinton, committed adultery; sending the message to our youth that it is acceptable to be dishonest and to betray anotherââ¬â¢s trust. Even though celebrities can have these negative impacts on our children, the good can sometimes outweigh the bad. For example, celebrities that has long lasting marriages, such as Denzell Washingtonââ¬â¢s 26 year marriage to his wife, or Kirk Douglasââ¬â¢ marriage to his wife for 51 years. This sends the message to our young children that stable homes and long lasting relationships are achievable and desirable. According to (Common Sense Media) when our children finally reach middle school, they become more interested in what their peers deem socially acceptable. Studies show time and time again that a connection exists between role models, advertising and the impact that these have on the way our children behave. However, parents still hold the pri mary influence in their childrenââ¬â¢s lives. Consider smoking, for instance. Research shows that when children see one of their idols or movie heroes smoking, and glamorized by the media, the odds that that child will start smoking more than doubles. According to (Common Sense Media) we are already aware of how advertising impacts young adults, this being the case; we should not underestimate the influence that young celebrities have on the lives of youth today. With celebrity blogs and gossip sites, scandalous pictures are mainstreamed online, talked about, kept current, and archived, making them accessible to children of any age. And furthermore the mediaââ¬â¢s unrelenting coverage centered on celebrity scandals gives the appearance that this type of behavior is normal. Our teenagers will mimic the actions of their peers and those that they look up to. One in every five teen girls have said that theyââ¬â¢ve sent provocative and revealing pictures of themselves over their cellular phones. â⬠Since celebrities are in the spotlight most of the time, you would think they would watch how they behave in public. Some do and some donââ¬â¢t, but even the good role models can have a bad incident that the media picks up on. When it comes down to it we should monitor what our children are watching and listening to, in the event that they do try to mimic what they have seen someone famous do, we can correct them and teach them right from wrong. A great example of a good role model is Arnold Schwarzenegger. He started out as a body builder, became a successful actor and is now the Governor of California. He has a long lasting marriage to Maria Shriver. Through his life, he sends the message to our youth that through determination and hard work you can do anything you set your mind to. According to (Sherman, T. ) ââ¬Å"Every celebrity, because of widespread fame and media exposure, has the choice to behave as a positive or negative example for t he rest of society. Even in the lucrative field of professional sports, where opportunities to misbehave are everywhere, there have been good examples for kids to emulate, and are still greatly admired today. For instance, theres Joe DiMaggio, Annika Sorenstam, Tiger Woods, Sugar Ray Leonard, Lou Gehrig, Joe Louis, Wilma Rudolph, the Williams sisters, Jerry Rice, and Chris Evert. ââ¬Å" We have to consider that there are those celebrities who try to be better role models for their younger audiences. Parents should realize that who their children grow up to become in life is based on how they are raised at home and how much time we spend with them. That being said, if our youngsters get into trouble and head down a path of destruction, it is not conceivable to fault a celebrity that is not involved in the childââ¬â¢s life. Parents are responsible for their children, not the celebrities and how they decide to live their lives. References Common Sense Media. (n. d. ). Underst anding Celebrity Influence. devine caroline. Yogh - A Letter of the Alphabet in Middle English
Yoghà (Ãâ)à was aà letterà of the alphabet inà Middle English. According to the editors of the American Heritage Dictionary, yogh was used to represent the sound (y) and the voiced and voiceless velar fricatives. Yogh can be found in the original manuscript of the late-14th-century romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight [Sir Gawayn and à ¾e Grene Knyà t], but the letterà died out during the 15th century. Middle English yogh was derived from the insular g inà Old English.à As explained below, the letter was pronounced in different ways according to a number of factors. Although the yogh has no exact equivalent today, it canà correspond to Modern English y as in yet, Modern English gh as in light, and Scottish Englishà ch as in loch. Examples and Observations The yogh ... asks us to make the sound that most Germans make when they say ich, which most Scots people make when they say loch, which most Welsh people make when they say bach, and which some Liverpudlians make when they say back. As the Old English said this kind of sound a good deal, it was very useful to have a letter for it. They had the Roman g which we see in the first line of Beowulf. The yogh was used in the Middle English period (late 12th-15th centuries) to represent the ch sound, perhaps as g had other work to do.(Michael Rose, Alphabetical: How Every Letter Tells a Story. Counterpoint, 2015)Pronunciations of Yogh in Middle EnglishYogh (Ãâ) was pronounced in several different ways, according to its position in the word. Initially, yogh was pronounced like y, as in Modern English yet. It had the same sound after the vowels e, i, or y, for example in the Middle English words yÃâe (eye) and hiÃâe (high), which unlike their Modern English counterparts were pronounce d with two syllables. Within words or at the ends of words, yogh or gh sometimes represented the sound of w, as in folÃâed (followed), or innoÃâe (enough), which we know from its use in rhyme was pronounced enow rather than with an f sound as in Modern English enough. Before t and after e, i, or y, yogh or gh was pronounced like ch in German ich (for example, in the Middle English ryÃât, right); before t and after a and o it was pronounced like the ch in Scottish loch or German Bach (for example, in Middle English soÃâte, sought). It had the same value word-finally in the word à ¾aÃâ, though. However, at the ends of words, it more often represented the unvoiced sound of s as in Modern English sill--though it may also at times have represented the ââ¬â¹voiced sound of z as in Modern English zeal (Vantuona 176).(David Gould,à Pearl of Great Price: A Literary Translation of the Middle English Pearl. University Press of America, 2012)à The gh Pronunciation of Yogh - [I]n Old English, ... one of the sound values of the letter yogh was /x/. ... Words like niÃât, hiÃâ, burÃâ, miÃât and thoÃâ were respelled by French scribes with a gh, so we get night, high, burgh, might and though as common spellings for these words in early Middle English. To begin with, the gh continued to be pronounced. When we read in the opening lines of The Canterbury Tales about the little birds sleeping all through the nyght, we need to take that spelling at face value and read it as /nIxt/, with the ch sound of Scots loch or Welsh bach. But the /x/ disappeared from southern English during the 15th and 16th centuries. North of the border, and in some other provincial accents, it stayed--hence modern Scots spellings such as moonlicht nicht.(David Crystal, Spell It Out. Picador, 2014)- [T]he breathy English g or y sound (once denoted by the English letter yogh) came to be spelled as GH. ... However, it was GHs bad luck to be left behind by subsequent, genera l changes in English pronunciation. Originally, in words like sight, although, cough, or enough, the Norman GH-spelling mirrored the medieval pronunciations. Yet these pronunciations later changed, variously, and today the whole family of English GH words is notoriously unphonetic in spelling--to the frustration of purists. ...(David Sacks,à Letter Perfect: The A-to-Z History of Our Alphabet. Knopf, 2010)- The digraph gh causes difficulty. It is commonly a relic of a velar or palatal fricative that is preserved as a velar fricative /x/ in Scots, as in bricht night (bright night). (1) It is normally silent after u as in taught, drought, naughty, thought, though, through, thorough, bough, and after i as in straight, weight, height, high, light, night. (2) It is pronounced /f/ in a few words such as cough, enough, laugh, rough, tough. (3) In the following place-names in England, each gh is different: Slough (rhymes with how), Keighley (Keethley), Loughborough (Luff-). (4) à In hicc ough, the gh was substituted for p (hiccup) in the mistaken belief that the word derived from cough. (5) It has disappeared in AmE draft, plow (formerly also used in BrE) and in dry, fly, sly, although preserved in the related nouns drought, flight, sleight. (6) It sometimes alternates with ch in related words: straight/stretch, taught/teach.(Tom McArthur,à Concise Oxford Companion to the English Language. Oxford University Press, 2005)From Yogh to Zee in Scottish EnglishThe yogh owes its origin to the Irish scribes who arrived in Saxon Britain in the 8th Century and began teaching the Anglo-Saxons to write--before this, old English was written in runes ... .It fell out of favor with the Normans, whose scribes disliked non-Latin characters and replaced it with a y or g sound, and in the middle of words with gh. But the Scottish retained the yogh in personal and place names, albeit mutating into a z to please the typesetters of the day.Inevitably, however, the euphemistic z became a real z, in some quarters at least. The surname MacKenzie now almost universally takes the zee sound although it would have originally been pronounced MacKenyie.(Why is Menzies Pronounced Mingis?
